Pergola Snow Load: What Buyers Need to Verify

A snow-load number is meaningful only when the units, sample, roof form, span, supports and test method are visible. Here is how to read the evidence and prepare a project review.

Short answerDo not select a pergola for a snow region from one kg/m² value alone. Verify the local design requirement, whether the value is nominal or a safety-test pressure, the tested model and dimensions, roof and support arrangement, measured deflection, permanent deformation, drainage and winter operating instructions.

What does a pergola snow-load value mean?

A value in kg/m² describes mass distributed over area; project standards may instead express pressure in kPa or kN/m². For comparison only, 100 kg/m² corresponds to approximately 0.981 kPa under standard gravity. Unit conversion does not determine whether a structure is suitable: the required design value and combinations must come from the applicable local process.

Two reports can show similar headline numbers while testing different spans, roof forms, durations and pass criteria. Always read the table around the number.

What did the JIAKE HR001 snow-load test show?

Intertek Testing Services Shenzhen Ltd., Guangzhou Branch issued report 241225201GZU-001 on January 20, 2025. It identifies one HR001 aluminum alloy louvered pergola sample with a 3 × 3 × 2.5 m specification. The report references EN 1991-1-3:2003+A1:2005 and the client's requirement, with performance determination stated to follow EN 12833.

Nominal pressure is not the same as safety pressure

The report labels 107 kg/m² as nominal snow pressure Pn and 160 kg/m² as safety pressure Ps. Buyers should preserve those labels. Advertising only the higher value without explaining that it was the safety-test pressure removes critical context and may lead to an incorrect comparison.

For procurement, ask the supplier to state which value is used for normal project selection, which value is a test checkpoint, and what limits apply to deflection, permanent set and continued operation.

Can kg/m² be converted into snow depth?

Not reliably without snow density. Fresh, wind-packed, wet and refrozen snow can have very different mass at the same depth. A depth-only claim therefore gives buyers false confidence. Use the local ground/roof snow requirement expressed through the applicable design process, not a generic centimetre or inch conversion.

Eight factors that can change the required pergola configuration

  1. Installation location and elevation. Snow conditions can vary sharply within the same country or region.
  2. Roof area and span. A larger bay can increase member demand and deflection.
  3. Roof form. Louvered and fixed roofs do not behave identically.
  4. Drifting and adjacent roofs. Building geometry can create uneven accumulation.
  5. Post and support layout. Adding, moving or removing supports changes the load path.
  6. Attached connections. The supporting wall or building structure must accept the transferred load.
  7. Drainage and freeze-thaw. Gutters and downpipes must remain maintainable during winter conditions.
  8. Operation and maintenance. Owners need defined snow-clearing and motor-use instructions for the ordered system.

What profile information should be visible?

A useful proposal identifies the complete section set. The supplied JIAKE pergola schedule lists, for example, a 173 medium-duty system with a 150 × 150 × 2.0 mm post, 140 × 161 × 2.0 mm beam and 173 × 45 × 2.0 mm blade. A larger 220 series lists a 150 × 150 × 2.0 mm post, 230 × 150 × 2.5 mm beam and 220 × 53 × 1.8 mm blade.

These dimensions help distinguish configurations, but they are not capacity claims by themselves. Alloy condition, internal geometry, span, joints, fasteners, motorized roof details, anchors and foundation all matter.

The correct choice depends on intended use and available documentation. A fixed roof is not automatically suitable for every snow region, and a louvered roof is not automatically unsuitable. Start from the local requirement and the verified configuration.

What to request before placing an order

  • Project location, applicable snow requirement and source.
  • Dimensioned plan and elevation of the proposed structure.
  • Post, beam and roof-member schedule for the quoted model.
  • Attachment, base plate, anchor and foundation assumptions.
  • Report or calculation that clearly matches the proposed configuration.
  • Winter operation, inspection, clearing and maintenance instructions.
  • Separate documentation for the motor and electrical system.

Frequently asked questions

Is 160 kg/m² the rated snow load of every JIAKE pergola?

No. It was the safety pressure recorded for the specific HR001 sample in report 241225201GZU-001. Other models, sizes and installations require review.

Does a passed load test mean there will be no deflection?

No. The report recorded temporary deflection under load and permanent deformation after unloading. Performance criteria should state acceptable limits rather than implying zero movement.

Can I compare snow-load claims from different suppliers directly?

Only after aligning model, dimensions, roof area, pressure type, duration, standard, deformation limits and failure criteria. A headline number without these fields is not an equivalent comparison.

What information is enough for a first review?

Country, city or postcode, approximate width and depth, roof preference, attached or freestanding layout and site photos are enough to begin a preliminary route.
